Lyon Switzerland midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed he actually wanted to leave Liverpool last year, but the Reds refused to let him go.

The Swiss playmaker was at Anfield for three years before ending in August 2021 when he moved to Lyon for £9.5 million.

The 29-year-old has not been a key figure in Jürgen Klopp’s squad and has not started at all this season.

He made just 63 appearances after joining from Stoke for £13million in 2018 and has never proven himself as a starter.
